Who do I need to have served with court papers? How can I find an agent for service of process?

When you start or are involved in a lawsuit, you need to have the parties being sued served with court papers. The California Courts website has a webpage Service of Court Papers which describes who to serve and how to find them, along with other information such as who can serve court papers and different types of service.

The “Who to Serve” section of the Service of Court Papers webpage describes who needs to b be served in different situations, such as if you are suing an individual, a single-owner business, a corporation, a city, the state, etc.

For information on finding an agent of service for serving a corporation and certain other types of business entities, see the California Secretary of State webpage Service of Process. The webpage also describes other ways of serving business entities besides by serving an agent of service.
