An important step in filing a lawsuit is officially notifying the parties being sued, which is called service of process.
The California Courts have an informative webpage on service of process, Service of Court Papers. It has information on various rules around who can be a process server, different types of service, such as personal service, service by mail, and substituted service, who to serve, and how to find the person to be served.
The California Courts also has a webpage Serve Your Claim which has information on service of process in small claims cases.
The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Civil Section can serve process in certain situations -- their Civil Section webpage has a list of levies and documents they will serve and a list for those they won’t serve.
